- Ian McKillop Review added: 2018.05.21★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆Not a lot left of the castle except the huge keep.... but still interesting to wander around. Sadly the cells of the 16 conscientious objectors (WW1) are currently not open to the public so we're left to just read a notice about them. However in the museum section of the visitor centre there are plenty of exhibits to keep interested parties informed of the story.
The grounds are great for picnics and provide a good area for play and the toilets are probably the best I've encountered at a castle.
All in all the castle is worth a visit - but probably only one. Beware of the very steep and narrow steps in the keep. When busy they almost need traffic lights as passing is impossible. Definitely not suitable for those with weak knees or hips !
